Nineteen
As Angelica stacked vegetables into baskets in front of Greenleaf, she felt a real sense of joy rising inside her. Before the first murder, every day had been like thisâfull of promise that lovely things could, and would, happen soon.
There was still a murderer on the loose and something scary in the Hollow, but Anna Mae was home. This felt to Angelica as if half the battle was already won. Knowing that the girl was safe and well and that Willa was more than likely having the best nightâs sleep of her life gave Angelica a feeling of triumph.
Vlad rolled around in the sunlight as Angelica came in, batting her foot with his soft paws.
âI see youâre working hard,â she said, smiling. He blinked at her, pricking up his ears to pull his most adorable face. She laughed as she put aside her basket and leaned over to pat him. He responded with a furious purr.
The door jingled behind her, and Angelica jumped in surprise. It was only 8AM and she wasnât expecting customers so early. When she saw it was Cary she jumped up with a smile, only to have it fall right off her face when she saw his expression.
âWhat happened?â she asked, fully expecting another murder. Cary gave her a grim stare.
âItâs Bren. Last night Lennyâs church had a memorial for him. Bren showed up, furious. She shoved the guy down off the pulpit and screamed at the congregation about Lenny not deserving to be honored, that he was a conman, all that stuff. Then she started wrecking up the church.â
âWhoa. Actually breaking things?â
âYes. She told them she was going to sue them all and pulled out a pick mattock, just like what we think the murder weapon is. She went berserk, smashing up anything in her way. Most of the people there just bolted. I donât think any of them know about the money situation.â
âIs it the murder weapon?â
âNot sure yet. Bren says she found it lying around near the church.â
Angelica nodded, her mind pouncing on this information and instantly joining the dots. She must have seen it lying around in the debris around the church and not noticed it. That was why she had felt like she was missing something.
âSo, you guys managed to recover it?â
âYeah, that part wasnât hard. Bren dropped it and took off crying. Police were called to the incident pretty quickly. Bren and most of the congregation were gone by the time we got there. but we recovered the mattock. Itâs gone to forensics already.â
âHow long will it take to get results?â
âNot sure. Thatâs up to the chief. He might be putting everything on rush because of Kippy throwing a fit, but heâs still a cheap skate.â
Angelica nodded, frowning. She had to tell Cary about Anna Mae, especially now that he had mentioned the chief, but she had to do it carefully. She knew how he would erupt if she told him she had gone into the Hollowâespecially since she had been injured right before that.
